    (Formerly Garrett)

In April 2020, I was a PhD student at University of Colorado Boulder in Information Science researching, teaching, and publishing about tech ethics when I got COVID-19.

Acute COVID-19 during the first wave was terrifying, but I made it through. I'm one of the lucky ones. Kind of.

April 3, 2025, marks 5 years living with long covid. I mastered out of my PhD program in 2022 because of my neurocognitive challenges, debiliating fatigue, and *waves hands at 60 overlapping symptoms*.

It is impossible to finish a PhD when you can't read or write. Trust me-- I TRIED.

I'm committed to recovery in 2025-2026, which means not working to allow my brain and body to heal, applying for (and hopefully getting) disability, and unfortunately ending a 16 year relationship with the person I thought would be with me through "sickness and health".

I'm not sure how this site will morph but... it will. I will share my story: the destruction and the new beginnings that have resulted from this terrible illness.

Ideally, a year dedicated to recovery will help me get back to my tech ethics research with Professor Casey Fiesler in The Internet Rules Lab.

My Medium blog gets an update once every (?) years or so... 🤷🏻‍♀️ But maybe I'll share my story there? I'm not sure yet. I'd like to find a platform that doesn't exploit humans but... that's proving hard these days. If you have any recommendations for non-evil platforms, LMK.

I'm a believer in learning, reflection, research, and bringing interdisciplinary teams together to solve hard problems. (even though I mostly nap these days)
